GOALS

GOALS

Definition:

The purpose toward which an endeavor is directed; an objective.

Brief Explanation:

In counseling, it is helpful to establish goals for the purpose for the counseling process. I often ask a counselee; “How long do you think the counseling will take and what do you expect to get from it.” Some respond realistically, some not, generally a reflection of their way of seeing the world. Some have expectations that are realistic (to help me cope, to learn more, to grow up) some are not (to completely alter my personality, to make everyone like me, to find a husband/wife, etc.). Setting or establishing goals that are definable, measurable,  and  obtainable  within  a  reasonable  time frame is an effective counseling strategy.

The Word of God:

Psalm 37:4, 5

“Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart.  Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He will do it.”

1 Corinthians 9:24, 25

“Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize?  Run in such a way that you may win.  Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things.  They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we are imperishable.”

Galatians 6:9

“Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.”
