Jonathan Barber, Th.M.
Adjunct
Professor of Theology
- Th.M. - Dallas
Theological Seminary
- B.A. -
Biblical Languages, Bryan College
Jonathan was born
to missionary parents, Albert and Doris Barber, in
Managua, Nicaragua, Central America (1953). They
were career missionaries with a passion for
evangelism and church planting.
In 1973 he began
undergraduate studies at Southeastern Bible College
in Birmingham, Alabama, and eventually transferred
to Bryan College to major in Greek and minor in
Hebrew. In April of 1984 Jonathan graduated
with a Masters of Theology from Dallas Theological
Seminary. These five years were some of the most
memorable and certainly the most challenging of his
life. Jonathan’s time in Seminary changed him
forever.
In 1984 Jonathan,
his Dawn, and his children Nathan and Jennifer moved
to Burlington, Ontario Canada to become Assistant
Pastor at the large and growing Park Bible Church.
He was ordained by the Associated Gospel Churches of
Canada and was able to participate in all aspects of
the pastorate including teaching, preaching, much
administration, counseling and the tremendous
opportunities to impact people with a street level
faith. This was again a growing and stretching time
for Jonathan and his family.
Jonathan and his
family eventually left Park Bible Church and
pastoral ministry to regain spiritual health,
physical rest, and a fresh perspective to pursue a
doctoral degree. They moved to Oklahoma City.
Although he was no longer on a pastoral team,
Jonathan’s new pastor in Oklahoma City encouraged
him to function as a lay-pastor, with some
preaching, a lot of regular teaching and even
conducting weddings and funerals. This is what he
needed.
Jonathan is
presently employed by the State Farm Insurance
Company. This gave them an opportunity to
raise their now three children, put them through
college and begin looking to the next phase in
life…”early retirement” and fulltime mission work.
Throughout these years Jonathan never lost the
passion to teach and to help others understand the
depths and joys of studying God’s Word.
With this passion
in mind, Jonathan is pursuing a doctorate degree at
Oxford Graduate School in order to better prepare
himself to spend the remaining years of “early
retirement” in teaching bible and theology when and
wherever the opportunity presents itself.
God allows many
twists and turns in each life, some human error,
some a person’s unwise decisions, but all of them
can be used by God to create a dancing floor on
which to celebrate life. |
