Dear Friend of Vision
“Then Jesus said to His disciples, If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. (Mt. 16:24)
Self-denial…what a concept. Self-denial does not mean self-abasement, but it does mean we have to be willing to put off some short term pleasures for long term blessings, This is difficult for many in our consumer, I want it now age in which we live. Jesus certainly understood the problem. I want my family now, my house now, my money now…and we understand that as well. But if you are really going to come after Jesus…I mean really go for it in God, it requires setting aside, at least for a season, our wants and wishes for a greater purpose.
I have heard it said that this generation of young people lack the ability to delay gratification. However, my observation is that they are unwilling to delay self-satisfaction without a compelling reason, a cause to live and die for. And isn’t this the very challenge Jesus was presenting to his disciples? Make a choice…pick up your cross…go for your purpose, which will require you to give up some of your personal comfort for the long-term goal of really knowing Christ. We must, as leaders, provide the inspiration for our young people who are simply waiting for someone to come alongside them and issue the challenge. Many are ready to go for it with Jesus if they are asked to by us.
