Dear Friend of Vision
“Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.
For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead…” (Col. 3:1-5a)
Not every “if” in scripture is an if…if you know what I mean?
Paul is clearly assuming that he is writing to believers committed to life in the Kingdom. He is simply reminding the leadership and congregation in Colossae that there is a right perspective, it requires:
- clear thinking,
- important remembering,
- then there are other things to consider if they are going to continue to grow in the grace received in Christ.
Firstly, the right perspective (clear thinking) is to set one’s mind on Christ, since we have been, not will be, but have been raised and seated with Christ, and we are to keep on seeking those things that are above; seeing heaven come to earth. The fact is, we are already dead, having had our sins nailed to the cross, and are fully alive in Christ, hidden with Christ in God, and we are to receive his glory both now and moving forward. It is important that we remember this, and forget about the things the devil and the world would like us to remember.
Finally, as you think about yourself (consider), which we don’t want to do too often, remember that we are dead…yet alive in Christ, and give him thanks. Anyway, something to think about in regards to our own lives and those we serve through our teaching and preaching of the word.
