In this book the reader will review God’s plan and the procedures to bring about his purposes. Further, the potential areas of failure will be discussed in detail. We will look at specific plans to bring about change in a believer’s life so that they might be conformed to the image of Christ.
SIMPLE BUT NOT EASY
It is relatively easy to get the children of Israel out of Egypt but very difficult to get Egypt out of the children of Israel. Even after their miraculous deliverance they still carried the disabling mentality of slavery. There were many things the Lord wanted to do for his children. The children of Israel (and his covenant people today) needed to develop an intimate walk with the Lord. They needed to be grounded in the knowledge of God’s ways, not just his works, becoming conformed to the image of Christ, obedient to God’s word and dependent upon God as the source of their life. Unfortunately, a whole generation perished in the wilderness because they did not understand the process, plan and purpose of God. This is still true for many believers who fall woefully short of God’s best for their life.
Over the last few years, many men and women of God who started out so well, miraculously delivered from sin, filled with the Holy Spirit of God, have fallen by the wayside, withered up in their journey towards God’s purposes. Along the road of life, in the middle of a wilderness experience, the heat of the sun and the cares of the world derailed them (hopefully, temporarily). This same scenario is repeated in local churches every week, where good people are laid low by besetting sins or wrong choices. It is my belief that, with God’s help, all believers’ can traverse the wilderness experience, though a time of suffering and difficulty, with grace and strength. It is in the wilderness experiences of life that we are forced to face the character issues of our own hearts. Further, it is in the wilderness that we learn to endure the pain of facing our own failures with victory and begin to inherit the promises that God intended.
For those raised with the assumption that there’s a direct “magic carpet ride” from Egypt to Canaan, I hope you won’t be too offended by the reality of the situation in which we live. For all believers there is a wilderness. All of us must go through it. God’s plan is for us to come through it as a transformed individual whose heart and mind have been renewed to the extent that we become over-comers. In the process we become filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, which is necessary to defeat the enemies of God and possess the territory that God has called us to possess. (see Obadiah 17)
