DEPRESSION

Definition:

Depression is the condition of feeling sad or despondent. From a psychological view it is a mental disorder characterized by an inability to concentrate, insomnia, loss of appetite, feelings of extreme sadness, guilt, helplessness and hopelessness, and thoughts of death. Also called clinical depression.

Brief Explanation:

There can be multiple reasons for depression. Sadly, many of God’s people suffer from the overwhelming sadness and lethargy caused by depression. It is important for a counselor to determine the root cause of the depression where possible. Is it a delayed grief response? If so, grief is the answer. Is it a problem with brain chemistry? Then medication and prayer for healing is key. Is it unresolved hurt? Issues of abandonment or betrayal, bitterness and unforgiveness? Then confession and repentance is needed for victory. But we must acknowledge that it can be a combination of any and all of this, or more. Thus, to counsel someone suffering may require a multidisciplinary approach, where you first rule out the physical (a good physical may help, as may medication), while encouraging the client to share their story. Often, a local support group such as a home fellowship can help, along with light physical exercise, which can counteract mild symptoms of depression. Depression, a major problem in Western culture is in the church as the church is a microcosm of the world in which we live. See Dazzling Secrets for Despondent Saints, Dr. Ken Chant.

But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed.”

“Then he said to them, “Go, eat of the fat, drink of the sweet, and send portions to him who had nothing prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.”
