Attitude

Definition:

A position of the body or manner of carrying oneself: stood in a graceful attitude. Also, a state of mind or a feeling; disposition: had a positive attitude about work. It can also mean an arrogant or hostile state of mind or disposition.

Brief Explanation:

I have heard many parents state with dismay that they just did not know what to do with their adolescent because he or she had an attitude. By that, of course, they mean a negative, angry or hurtful attitude towards self, others or God. Usually, a negative attitude comes from negative thoughts and beliefs, which may come from having been hurt, rejected, abandoned or betrayed. Thus, when encountering someone with a primary negative attitude, it is important to take time to explore the possible reasons for the attitude. If hurt or rejection is evident (there are reasons for the attitude that are legitimate), then prayer for healing is needed and counsel to help them forgive (again, not always easy, taking time, sensitivity and grace, grace, grace) and accept God’s view of the ones who have hurt or taken advantage of them. If, however, the attitude comes from rebellion or less legitimate reasons, repentance should be encouraged and renewing of the mind is necessary. Again, the word can be most powerful to help those with a half empty glass orientation to life, if they will submit themselves to the word of God.

The Word of God:

Ephesians 4:22-24

“…that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind and  put  on  the  new  self,  which  in  the likeness of God has been created  in righteousness and holiness of the truth.”

Colossians 3:1-3, 15

“If then you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.”

Hebrews 12: 1,2

“ …let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race hat is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus.”
